Keir Starmer faced a backlash as Conservative MPs attempted to refer him to a parliamentary body for allegedly providing misleading information regarding the Peter Mandelson controversy. Fifteen Labour Members of Parliament, including former Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell and Emma Lewell-Buck, defied party orders to vote against the referral. The rebellion also included left-wing MPs such as Richard Burgon, Rebecca Long-Bailey, Nadia Whittome, Kate Osborne, and Apsana Begum.

Despite the opposition, the government successfully blocked the referral with a majority of 112 as Members of Parliament voted 335 to 223 to dismiss the call for a parliamentary investigation. Cabinet Minister Darren Jones criticized Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch for engaging in what he described as a politically motivated charade rather than addressing substantive issues affecting constituents and the nation.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson labeled the move to refer him to the Privileges Committee as a political tactic aimed at undermining his credibility ahead of upcoming elections. He emphasized his commitment to transparency while dismissing the referral as a ploy by rivals to distract from the government’s agenda.

During the parliamentary debate, Labour MP Emma Lewell-Buck expressed frustration over the handling of the situation, questioning why the Prime Minister did not opt to appear before the Privileges Committee to defend his actions. She criticized the government’s approach, stating that the vote had created an impression of secrecy and complicity, contributing to public distrust.

The ongoing controversy surrounding the Peter Mandelson affair has sparked divisions within the Labour Party, with MPs voicing concerns about transparency, accountability, and the impact on public perception.
