A young man had his coveted job taken away by a persistent and elaborate stalker who turned his life into a nightmare. Riley Taylor, 22, faced relentless harassment from Elliot McLelland, 24, who falsely claimed to be an MI5 operative while infiltrating Riley’s life and threatening his career as a Ryanair flight attendant.
McLelland relentlessly pursued Riley, shadowing him at work, loitering at the airport, and even booking flights on which Riley was scheduled to work. Despite being sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for a year, and receiving a five-year restraining order, McLelland walked free from Liverpool Magistrates Court. Riley criticized the judgement, stating he had to rebuild his career and life after losing his job due to the ordeal.
Riley, who started working for Ryanair at 18 through Cabin Crew International, considered it his dream job. He recalled noticing a man frequently at the airport who later contacted him through a dating app, claiming to watch him and proposing friendship. McLelland concocted elaborate tales, including posing as an undercover MI5 agent investigating airport corruption.
After gaining Riley’s trust and shifting communication to Snapchat, McLelland continued his harassment, surveilling Riley, following him home, and even tracking him on vacation. Riley eventually reported the stalking to his employers, leading to a meeting with HR and Ryanair officials. Despite his efforts to seek help, Riley was terminated from his position in July 2023, with no support from his colleagues.
McLelland pleaded guilty to stalking charges but evaded sentencing, causing further distress to Riley until his arrest in March. Following a brief stint in prison, McLelland received a suspended sentence. The incident left Riley traumatized, having lost not only his job but also his sense of security.
