Former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell reportedly used embezzled party funds for extravagant purchases, including a high-end coffee machine, expensive umbrellas, and a copy of his estranged wife Nicola Sturgeon’s speeches. Sturgeon announced the end of their marriage in January 2025.
A detailed 126-page indictment accuses Murrell of making numerous purchases with embezzled SNP money, giving insight into his lavish spending habits. Items ranged from a motorhome and luxury cars to high-tech gadgets and collector’s items. Notable purchases included a pricey Celestron NexStar telescope and accessories, a Jura Giga 5 Cromo coffee machine, designer salt and pepper grinders, and multiple umbrellas.
The indictment revealed a penchant for premium kitchen gadgets and luxury home decor, with purchases like a wine cooler set, egg poacher, and cupboard organizers. Additionally, Murrell spent on personal accessories and gifts, such as manicure sets, a Beatles fountain pen set, and unique “space pens.”
Entertainment items like DVD boxsets, video games, and a Monopoly board game were also part of the extravagant shopping list. Outdoor and hobby-related purchases like bird feeders, a weather station rain gauge, and rock climbing gear were included. The spending spree extended to luxury items like musical advent calendars, birthday cards, and gourmet biscuits.
Murrell admitted to embezzling over £400,000 from the SNP, while Sturgeon maintained she had no knowledge of the misused funds. She emphasized their separate finances and lack of access to his financial records. Sturgeon clarified that she was unaware of many purchased items and had no reason to suspect improper use of SNP funds. She highlighted her clearance of wrongdoing following a thorough Police Scotland investigation.
