As temperatures soar during this Bank Holiday weekend, sleep experts caution against using a fan while sleeping, despite the appeal. The UK is expected to experience high temperatures, with 18 counties forecasted to reach 34C or higher on Monday and Tuesday, making it potentially the hottest May days on record.
The Met Office predicts highs of 35C on Monday and Tuesday, surpassing the current record of 32.8C. The weather model indicates that temperatures could reach 34C in Lincolnshire on Monday, with most of central and southern England experiencing temperatures in the low-30s. London and the south-west could see highs of 35C on Tuesday, with a total of 18 English counties likely to exceed 34C.
While many turn to fans for quick relief from the heat, experts warn against leaving fans on overnight due to potential health risks. Dr. Kiran Dintyala highlighted that fan circulation can trigger allergies and asthma, while also causing dryness in the room leading to dehydration and various health issues like dry eyes and sinus infections.
Sleeping with a fan blowing directly on you can result in a sore throat, muscle aches, and disrupted sleep. Mattress Next Day CEO, Martin Seeley, supports avoiding overnight fan use, emphasizing the negative impacts on health and sleep quality. Dust accumulation on fan blades can worsen allergies and breathing issues, while dehydration from the fan’s airflow can exacerbate fatigue and discomfort.
As temperatures are expected to remain high, it is important to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to cold air from fans, which can lead to muscle pains and mucus overproduction. The Met Office forecasts continued warm weather, with temperatures likely to reach or exceed 28C until at least Thursday. Looking ahead to June, warm and dry conditions are expected, with the possibility of occasional showers and cooler coastal areas.
By being mindful of the risks associated with using fans during sleep, individuals can better manage their health and comfort during the ongoing heatwave.
