Simone Abrahamsohn, a resident of Toronto, shares her journey of becoming the primary caregiver for her older brother, Stuart, following the passing of their mother. Stuart, who is both autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires assistance with daily tasks such as feeding, transfers, personal care, and managing emotional fluctuations triggered by loud noises.

Despite the challenges, Simone cherishes the companionship of her brother, who has a fondness for pistachio milkshakes and violinist podcasts. Reflecting on their childhood, Simone recalls feeling embarrassed by Stuart’s neurodivergent behaviors, such as stimming and introversion, which led to misunderstandings among peers.

Acknowledging her own struggles with ADHD, Simone highlights the efforts she puts into managing her own emotions and behaviors to maintain a peaceful living environment with Stuart. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing and respecting each other’s boundaries to ensure harmony.

As they navigate their unique living situation, Simone is determined to advocate for Stuart and provide him with the agency to make decisions. Despite sacrificing personal pursuits like acting classes due to caregiving responsibilities, Simone finds fulfillment in nurturing their sibling bond and creating a supportive environment for both of them.

Through this shared journey of growth and understanding, Simone aims to make up for past shortcomings and embrace the opportunity to strengthen their sibling relationship as they face the complexities of living as neurodivergent adults together.
