Joan, the wife of Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson, passed away due to a blood clot following a fall-induced back injury. Lady Joan Sarah Drummond Branson, aged 80, died on November 24 at London Bridge Hospital. A pre-inquest review revealed that her death was not a result of negligence. However, an upcoming inquest will investigate whether she should have been prescribed blood thinners and if she was wearing anti-clot stockings at the time of her death.

Statements from an expert witness will be crucial in determining if the prescription of the anti-coagulant Heparin could have prevented her death, considering her history of blood clots. An expert haematologist will present a report during the scheduled September inquest. Joan’s battle with blood clots dated back to at least 2010, with a severe case in 2018 that required innovative treatment.

Despite the medical challenges, Sir Richard praised the care his wife received over the years. He shared the news of her passing on Instagram, expressing his deep sorrow and love for her. The couple, who met in 1976, had a remarkable love story that endured various trials, including the loss of their first child in 1979. Joan’s legacy includes her philanthropic work supporting premature birth charities.

She is survived by her husband, their children Holly and Sam, and four grandchildren. The family remains united in honoring Joan’s memory and the positive impact she had on their lives.
