Firefighters had to intervene urgently by cutting open a silo to rescue a farmer who tragically lost his life in an industrial mishap.

According to witnesses, emergency responders hurried to Orrell Farm just before 5pm on Thursday, May 21. The incident, which occurred on Orrell Lane in Burscough, Lancashire, prompted a swift response from Lancashire Police, who confirmed their arrival at 4:37pm. Sadly, the man was discovered deceased at the scene.

A representative from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service mentioned that fire crews, along with an urban search and rescue team, were on the scene. A neighbor revealed that rescuers had to cut open a silo on the farm in a desperate attempt to save the farmer, known locally as John.

Despite the strenuous efforts of the emergency services, John, the owner of the farm, believed to be in his 80s, succumbed to the accident.

The incident is being handled as non-suspicious, and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has taken over the investigation.

An unnamed neighbor, who had known John for years, described him and his wife, residents of the farm, as private individuals. The neighbor mentioned that emergency services were actively engaged at the scene, with firefighters working on the silo to reach the farmer. The neighbor expressed sorrow, highlighting John’s kind nature and dedication to farming even in his advanced age.

Reports suggest that John’s family still resides nearby. John owned land surrounding the farm and on Orrell Lane, as witnessed by a neighbor who saw a vehicle arriving at the farm to collect grain at 3pm.

Photographs taken at the location display significant piles of grain near the silos at the rear of the farm, close to the Liverpool-Leeds Canal. Visible damage to one of the silos attracted the attention of onlookers inspecting the area.

A fire service spokesperson stated that multiple units responded to the incident, with firefighters collaborating with paramedics. Regrettably, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene, and condolences were extended to the family and friends during this trying period. Firefighters remained at the scene for approximately four hours and 40 minutes.

Lancashire Police confirmed the incident and the unfortunate demise of the man in his 80s. They are providing support to the family, and the Health Service Executive has been informed for further action.

A representative from Health and Safety confirmed an ongoing investigation into the incident.
