A woman was attacked by a shark near the shore of Coogee Beach in Sydney, Australia, prompting the activation of a shark alarm. The victim, in her 30s, sustained severe injuries to her arm and leg and was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition. The incident occurred just before 11:15 am on Saturday, June 13, with emergency services responding to the scene.
Witnesses reported that a lifeguard on a surfboard quickly came to the woman’s aid upon hearing screams and spotting the shark’s fins. The lifeguard signaled a shark alarm by making an X gesture with his arms, indicating danger in the water. The witness described seeing a significant amount of blood in the water, suggesting that the swimmer had likely been bitten on the torso.
Members of the public assisted in pulling the woman out of the water and providing initial first aid before emergency services arrived. The police administered further aid before transporting the victim via helicopter to the hospital. As a precautionary measure, nearby beaches, including Coogee, Clovelly, and Bronte, were closed following the incident.
This shark attack comes after a previous tragic incident involving a 12-year-old boy named Nico Antic, who was fatally attacked by a shark in the same area earlier in the year. The recent attack has raised concerns about safety in the waters, especially following a series of shark-related incidents in the region.
