Seven Afghan nationals and refugees have been accused of rape and child sex abuse crimes, according to the authorities. The charges are part of an investigation into group-based child sexual exploitation in Norwich, as stated by Norfolk Police. Allegedly, the men engaged in sexual offenses from August 2023 to May 2025 and were involved in a grooming gang. They are set to appear before Norwich Magistrates’ Court soon.
The arrests of these individuals occurred following a coordinated police operation that targeted seven locations, including six in Norwich and one in Dumbarton, Scotland. Additionally, an eighth suspect, a 19-year-old man, was apprehended in Ireland. Legal procedures will be initiated to bring the suspect back to the UK.
The charges pertain to two victims who were teenagers at the time of the alleged incidents. It was clarified that none of the accused resided in asylum hotels in Norfolk, and the offenses did not occur at those locations.
Detective Superintendent Stacey Murray, leading the investigation, emphasized the importance of victim safety and well-being. The investigative team is diligently exploring all leads and gathering evidence while being sensitive to the victims’ traumatic experiences.
Superintendent Craig Miller addressed the shocking nature of the case and assured the community of Norwich and Norfolk’s commitment to safeguarding children from exploitation. The Phoenix Project was launched to enhance existing support for children and young people at risk outside their homes, involving collaboration between law enforcement, children’s services, and healthcare professionals.
Police officers will be present in Norwich and surrounding communities to offer reassurance, and individuals are encouraged to approach them with any concerns. Anyone with relevant information related to the investigation is urged to contact the police via phone or the official website, referencing Op Highwood26.
