A beloved rugby icon, Scott Hastings, passed away from cancer on a poignant day, coinciding with his late wife Jenny’s birthday, two years after her tragic disappearance. The 61-year-old Scottish sports legend, known for his record as his country’s most capped centre, had been battling Non-Hodgkin lymphoma for four years. The family, including his wife Jenny, had faced immense sorrow since her vanishing during a swim at Wardle Bay in Edinburgh in 2024 after years of mental health struggles.

In a statement issued by Scottish Rugby, Scott’s family confirmed his peaceful passing on May 17, surrounded by loved ones. The family expressed that Scott’s departure on Jenny’s birthday signified a reassuring reunion with his cherished wife. Despite undergoing cancer treatment, Scott’s health deteriorated rapidly leading to his peaceful passing at the Western General Hospital ICU.

Jenny’s body was discovered on their wedding anniversary, revealing her tragic decision to end her struggles by swimming out into the Firth of Forth from Wardie Bay. Scott had previously shared Jenny’s battle with severe depression and her challenges with mental health. His legacy in rugby, highlighted by his 65 caps for Scotland and representation in the British & Irish Lions and Barbarians, is a testament to his remarkable career on and off the field.

Former Scotland and Lions head coach, Sir Ian McGeechan, praised Scott’s leadership qualities and determination to win, recalling his standout performances during pivotal matches. Gregor Townsend, another former teammate and Scotland head coach, commended Scott as an iconic figure in Scottish rugby history, particularly emphasizing his defensive prowess during the 1990 Grand Slam victory.

Scott’s contributions to rugby were recognized with his induction into the Scottish Rugby Hall of Fame, and in his honor, the flag flew at half-mast at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium. The rugby community mourns the loss of a true legend whose impact transcended the sport.
