Starting this September, schools are mandated to have life-saving allergy pens available for emergencies, as per new statutory guidance released on Monday. The guidance emphasizes the importance of allergy training for teachers and the necessity for all schools to maintain clear allergy policies and healthcare plans.

Ministers have highlighted that these measures will ensure consistent standards nationwide, guaranteeing that every school is equipped with the necessary training, plans, and adrenaline devices. This development comes as a result of the advocacy efforts of Helen and Peter Blythe following the tragic death of their son, five-year-old Benedict, due to a severe allergic reaction at school in 2021.

Helen Blythe, co-Founder of the Benedict Blythe Foundation, expressed that the guidance signifies a significant moment for children with allergies and their families, marking the beginning of enhanced allergy safety protocols in schools. Education Minister Olivia Bailey also commended the implementation of “Benedict’s Law,” ensuring that schools have the essential training, plans, and equipment to safeguard all children.

Sarah Knight, chief executive of the Allergy Team, emphasized the importance of the new guidance in enhancing school safety for children with allergies. While the guidance was welcomed by Paul Whiteman, general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT, concerns were raised regarding staffing capacity and funding challenges. He stressed the importance of ensuring sufficient stocks of adrenaline auto-injectors across all schools and managing their safe storage and replenishment effectively.

The draft guidance was initially introduced in March and underwent a consultation process before its finalization.
