A contender known for donning a fox costume in opposition to Andy Burnham in Makerfield has withdrawn from Nigel Farage’s Clacton by-election, citing the increasingly absurd nature of the race. Rob Pownall, who received 18 votes in the previous election, expressed his inability to take Farage’s campaign seriously. Originally intending to run after Farage announced the by-election, Pownall found himself as the only candidate besides the parody contender Count Binface.

In a blog post, Pownall emphasized his decision not to participate in what he referred to as Farage’s circus. The Reform UK leader’s withdrawal was framed as a stand against the establishment, as he faced scrutiny over a £5 million undeclared gift from Christopher Harborne. Despite attempts to position the by-election as a people versus establishment battle, major parties like Labour, the Lib Dems, Conservatives, and Restore declined to field candidates.

Pownall, a wildlife advocate who previously ran in Makerfield and Edinburgh Central, highlighted the lack of seriousness in the Clacton by-election compared to previous contests he participated in. Concerned that the election was becoming a farce, Pownall opted to prioritize the genuine democratic process over being part of what he viewed as a mockery. Polling data indicated skepticism among voters, with a majority believing Farage’s decision to contest the by-election was a diversion from the financial scrutiny he faced.

Veronica Hawking from 38 Degrees criticized Farage’s motives, accusing him of evading accountability and transparency. Apart from the ongoing investigation into Farage’s financial dealings, there are additional concerns regarding benefits provided by George Cottrell, an associate of Farage. The situation has escalated with allegations of financial irregularities and investigations by authorities.

The public sentiment revealed in polling suggested a divided opinion on Farage’s intentions, with a significant portion questioning his motives. Despite Farage’s claims of victimization and his attempt to rally public support, the by-election in Clacton has been overshadowed by skepticism and lack of confidence in his candidacy. The emergence of Count Binface as a prominent challenger underscores the unconventional and contentious nature of the electoral race.
