The audience at BBC Question Time reacted with laughter and applause as Zia Yusuf, the home affairs spokesperson for Reform UK, evaded a question about whether he was turned down by Reform UK to run as a Member of Parliament. Despite his silence, his response—or lack thereof—spoke volumes.

During the discussion panel, Emily Thornberry, Chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee for the Labour Party, Kevin Hollinrake, Chairman of the Conservative Party, Zia Yusuf from Reform UK, and economist/journalist Stephanie Flanders were present.

Tensions rose when Hollinrake accused Yusuf of hypocrisy for criticizing candidates while never running for public office himself. Hollinrake questioned why Yusuf had not contested in various by-elections when given the chance.

Yusuf cryptically defended himself, suggesting that Hollinrake’s focus on his lack of participation in by-elections as the root of all issues was misguided. He emphasized that assumptions were being made about his actions and intentions.

When confronted with the observation that he had not been selected as a candidate in recent by-elections, Yusuf countered by criticizing the Conservative Party for what he called “cronyism.” He stressed that there is a process for standing in parliamentary by-elections and that assuming his lack of participation was unfair.

Hollinrake’s question about rejection was met with amusement and approval from the audience. The segment concluded with further clarification sought by the host, Fiona Bruce, regarding Yusuf’s stance on running for by-elections, to which Yusuf remained silent, leaving some ambiguity about his intentions.
