Skyrocketing ticket prices for the England’s World Cup match at the renowned MetLife Stadium have sparked an inquiry led by criminal prosecutors in the United States.

The attorneys general of New York and New Jersey have jointly issued subpoenas to FIFA, the global football governing body, in response to numerous complaints from fans. Allegations suggest fans were misled about the seating arrangements and charged exorbitant prices that did not align with the seats they received.

One disgruntled England supporter, John Pearson from Hull, expressed frustration, stating that FIFA’s treatment of fans as mere profit sources is disgraceful. Due to the excessive costs, Pearson will miss his first World Cup since 1998.

The investigation focuses on claims that fans were deceived about their seat locations, with suspicions that FIFA modified seating maps after ticket sales had commenced. This may have led to fans being reassigned to less favorable seats than initially expected.

The subpoenas are requesting detailed information on FIFA’s ticket allocation process, seat availability per match category, and overall ticketing procedures.

Ticket prices for group stage matches ranged from approximately £45 to over £445, with final match tickets priced at up to £8,180 at face value. However, resale prices soared to unprecedented levels, with some platforms listing final tickets for nearly £1.5 million.

Responding to public outcry, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani introduced an initiative to offer £37 tickets to city residents.

The investigation in New York and New Jersey is not the only legal challenge facing FIFA, as California Attorney General Rob Bonta has also sought information to assess potential violations of consumer protection laws during the ticket sales process.

FIFA has refrained from commenting on the ongoing investigations, maintaining that their pricing strategy caters to various market demands for each match.

The organisation’s pricing tactics and the controversy surrounding ticket sales have drawn sharp criticism from legal authorities and fans, emphasizing the need for transparency and fair ticketing practices.
