A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a woman just hours before her 21st birthday. Michael Doherty, 38, pleaded guilty to killing Courtney Angus at Leeds Crown Court, receiving a minimum term of 33 years behind bars. The tragic discovery of Courtney’s body was made following an arrest related to an armed robbery at an Asda store in Dewsbury.

Authorities found Ms. Angus at Doherty’s residence, where she had been assaulted and strangled. The post-mortem examination revealed she had sustained 76 injuries, with indications of “sexual activity” by the perpetrator. Shockingly, it was disclosed in court that Doherty had dismembered part of Courtney’s body and displayed it on his mantlepiece.

During the trial, it was revealed that Doherty had a previous conviction for rape in 2014. The judge emphasized the severity of the crime, stating that Doherty’s actions had irrevocably impacted Courtney’s loved ones. Doherty’s history of violence, including arson, assaults, robberies, and harassment, further underscored the disturbing nature of the case.

The court proceedings exposed Doherty’s disturbing behavior, revealing his romantic interest in Courtney and his threatening behavior towards her prior to the murder. Following the fatal incident, Doherty attempted to cover up the crime by engaging in theft and making alarming statements to acquaintances.

In a poignant statement, the judge highlighted the vibrant nature of Courtney’s character, emphasizing the profound loss felt by her family and friends. The court condemned Doherty’s actions as sexually motivated, emphasizing his predatory behavior towards women who rejected his advances.

The prosecution detailed Doherty’s troubling conduct leading up to the murder, including disturbing messages and erratic behavior. Doherty’s subsequent actions, involving theft and aggressive confrontations, further demonstrated the escalation of his violent tendencies.

After the tragic loss of Courtney, her family expressed their devastation, describing her as a beautiful soul with a passion for music and socializing. Doherty, in addition to the murder charge, also faced accusations of threatening behavior with a bladed article and affray.

The harrowing case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact of violence and the need for justice to be served in such heinous crimes.
