Prince William has made a generous donation of £1,000 to support a local initiative aiming to revive a community pub in Semington. The Semington Community Benefit Society, working towards reopening the Somerset Arms pub near Melksham, received the financial contribution from the Prince of Wales. Since its closure in 2023, the 200-year-old pub has been listed for sale at £395,000.

In a letter accompanying his donation, Prince William emphasized the vital role that rural pubs play in sustaining communities. The vice chair of the Semington Community Benefit Society, Andy Cobley, expressed gratitude for William’s support, stating that local residents were taken aback by the gesture.

“We are ecstatic about Prince William’s donation and his acknowledgment of the significance of pubs in our community,” said Cobley.

The community group extended an invitation to Prince William to inaugurate the reopening of the Somerset Arms by pulling the first pint, inspired by the prince’s advocacy for safeguarding and promoting pubs during a recent visit to London.

Ian Williamson, chair of the Semington Community Benefit Society, echoed the sentiments, highlighting the alignment of their cause with Prince William’s efforts to champion the preservation of local pubs. The society hopes to welcome the prince once the pub is operational again.

Responding to the community group, Prince William reiterated his commitment to supporting pubs as integral community hubs that contribute to the nation’s social fabric. He expressed eagerness to visit and join in the celebration upon the pub’s successful revival.

Prince William’s dedication to preserving struggling local pubs was evident during his visit to The Prince of Peckham pub in South London, where he emphasized the importance of pubs in fostering community connections and advocated for their protection and support.

During his pub visit, Prince William engaged with the pub owner, Clem Ogbonnaya, and participated in pulling a pint, receiving applause for his efforts. He emphasized the significance of pubs as community anchors and praised the camaraderie and teamwork that define these establishments.

By supporting initiatives like the Semington Community Benefit Society, Prince William continues to champion the preservation and revitalization of local pubs, recognizing their essential role in nurturing community spirit and cohesion.
