Recent findings have exposed the areas in Britain with the most polluted air, where certain communities are experiencing pollutant levels exceeding recommended limits by over four times.
Data from the Geographic Data Service indicates that a region in Camden, London, encompassing sections of Holborn, St Giles, and Covent Garden, ranks as the most contaminated area in the country. Residents in this zone are breathing in an average of nearly 21 micrograms of fine particulate matter annually and over 34 micrograms of nitrogen dioxide.
The World Health Organisation advises that levels should not surpass an annual average of five micrograms of PM2.5 and 15 micrograms of NO2. Nevertheless, experts emphasize that even these thresholds are not entirely safe, as pollutants can pose risks at any concentration.
PM2.5, in particular, is hazardous. These tiny particles can evade the body’s natural defenses, infiltrating deep into the lungs and bloodstream, leading to severe health hazards. Exposure to PM2.5 not only causes irritation like stinging eyes, coughing, and breathlessness but also elevates the likelihood of lung cancer, respiratory infections, and heart diseases.
Similarly, exposure to NO2 can inflame air passages, provoke asthma episodes, impair lung function, and heighten the risk of respiratory infections. An alarming 99% of neighborhoods in Britain exceeded the recommended levels for PM2.5, and 51% had NO2 levels above the limits.
Urban areas are the most impacted, with significantly higher concentrations of both pollutants, especially NO2, compared to rural regions. All the most affected areas in Britain are situated in London, while data also pinpoint the locations with the foulest air in each region.
These include a neighborhood in the Stone district of Dartford, Kent, an inner-city area in Aston Park, Birmingham, and portions of North Evington in Leicester. Other regional hotspots encompass areas in Bootle and Seaforth in Sefton, West Thurrock in Essex, the Sheepscars and Lovell Park neighborhoods in Leeds, and a locality in the Splott area of Cardiff.
Also notable are sections of North Shields in North Tyneside, Upper Montpelier in Bristol, and a neighborhood in the city center of Glasgow. Conversely, the areas with the cleanest air are predominantly found in remote, rural parts of Scotland and Wales, with parts of Devon in the south and Cumberland and Northumberland in the north of England exhibiting notably low air pollution levels.
Jonathan Blades, the head of policy and public affairs at Asthma + Lung UK, expressed concern, stating that the exposure of UK communities to unsafe air pollution levels, linked to around 43,000 deaths annually in the UK, is unacceptable.
Blades further highlighted the vulnerability of the 12 million individuals living with lung conditions to the impacts of poor air quality. He emphasized that current UK air pollution guidelines are outdated and insufficient in safeguarding communities.
