In a spirited exchange during Prime Minister’s Questions, Keir Starmer amused MPs by swiftly rebuffing the Liberal Democrat Leader. The Prime Minister, addressing Sir Ed Davey, dismissed his high expectations of the “man in the wetsuit,” poking fun at Sir Ed’s fondness for water sports antics. Laughter filled the Commons chamber, leaving Sir Ed in an awkward pause before he could resume speaking.
During the dialogue, Sir Ed questioned Mr. Starmer about leaked remarks from US ambassador Sir Christian Turner, implying America’s sole special relationship is with Israel. Additionally, Turner suggested that the scandal involving Peter Mandelson, Starmer’s predecessor, nearly ended his tenure as Prime Minister.
In response, the PM shrugged off Sir Christian’s comments as minor issues and criticized Sir Ed for supporting a Tory effort to refer him to a parliamentary sleaze inquiry regarding the Mandelson affair.
Sir Ed retorted by quoting Turner’s statements about the US relationship with Israel, the Prime Minister’s job security post-elections, and Jeffrey Epstein’s associates avoiding accountability. He queried if the PM feared dismissing another ambassador for speaking the truth.
Mr. Starmer downplayed the accusations, noting the barrage of attacks from opposition parties in recent weeks. He highlighted contradictions in Sir Ed’s stance on the Mandelson issue, emphasizing his surprise at Sir Ed’s participation in the latest allegations.
The PM, unimpressed, remarked that he expected baseless accusations from the Opposition Leader, Kemi Badenoch, rather than constructive engagement from Sir Ed.
According to the Financial Times, Sir Christian expressed disdain for the term “special relationship” in describing UK-US ties, favoring a more nuanced view. He acknowledged the deep historical ties between the UK and US, particularly in defense and security.
These revelations come amid strained US-UK relations due to fallout from the Iran conflict and during King Charles’ pivotal state visit to America.
