Nigel Farage is being urged to undergo a standards investigation for not disclosing a £5 million donation from a cryptocurrency billionaire, according to critics. The leader of the Reform party is facing criticism for receiving the donation from Christopher Harborne, a tycoon based in Thailand, just before taking office as an MP. Parliamentary regulations require new MPs to declare any donations or gifts received in the year leading up to their parliamentary term.
Farage has defended the seven-figure donation, stating that it was provided to cover his security expenses. The donation from Harborne was made prior to Farage announcing his candidacy in Clacton, as reported by The Guardian. In response to the situation, Tory chairman Kevin Hollinrake has announced that Farage will be referred to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner for not complying with the donation disclosure rules.
Labour’s Anna Turley has accused Farage of violating rules by not declaring the financial support from his billionaire supporter. Turley emphasized the importance of transparency in politics and criticized Reform for potentially undermining public trust in the political system.
Christopher Harborne, also known as Chakrit Sakunkrit in Thailand, has donated substantial amounts to Farage’s party and the Conservative Party. Despite the £5 million donation not appearing in the official members’ register of interests, Reform maintains that all regulations have been adhered to.
Farage explained that the donation was intended to ensure his safety in light of threats he has faced, including his home being firebombed. He expressed disappointment at having to discuss his private finances due to leaked information, which he believes was obtained unlawfully.
The issue has raised concerns about the influence of wealthy donors on British politics. Calls have been made to limit individual donations to safeguard the integrity of political processes. A Reform spokesperson affirmed that the donation was a personal gift given before Farage’s election and expressed confidence in their compliance with regulatory requirements.
The MPs’ code of conduct mandates the declaration of financial interests and gifts received in the year before entering Parliament. The code emphasizes the importance of transparency and timely reporting of any changes to financial interests.
