Prime Minister Mark Carney is gearing up to unveil 167 potential investment opportunities at an upcoming summit in Toronto. These opportunities include projects like a floating LNG terminal on B.C.’s coast, a high-speed rail line connecting Edmonton and Calgary, and a pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific Ocean. The detailed 66-page “prospectus” obtained by CBC News offers insight into the various investment prospects that Ottawa and Canadian business leaders will present at the event.

Scheduled for September 14 and 15, the investment summit, organized by the prime minister in collaboration with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Public Sector Pension Investment Board, aims to attract a significant influx of investment, targeting an ambitious goal of $1 trillion. Notably, the summit has extended invitations to prominent international investors and Canadian business figures, seeking to foster partnerships amidst global trade disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties.

The investment opportunities outlined in the prospectus span across eight key sectors, including conventional and clean energy, mining, marine infrastructure, power utilities, digital technology, advanced manufacturing, and transportation. Each project is detailed with information on its development stage, required capital expenditure, and the type of investment needed for successful implementation.

Among the notable projects are the $57 billion US expansion of the Port of Churchill, a $44 billion investment in Nova Scotia’s Wind West offshore wind project, a proposed $35 billion West Coast oil pipeline, and the $28.5 billion Ksi Lisims LNG terminal project. Additionally, the prospectus features plans for a range of projects, from a float glass manufacturing facility in Manitoba to advancements in night-vision technology and satellite technology for Earth observation.

While some projects are on the cusp of realization, others are in earlier stages of development. For instance, the Ksi Lisims project is deemed “fully permitted and shovel ready,” while a graphite project in Saskatchewan is still undergoing preliminary economic and environmental assessments.

The document also outlines a $10.9 billion initiative for a high-speed rail line linking Calgary and Edmonton, as well as a $35 billion oil pipeline connecting Alberta’s crude production to a terminal in southern British Columbia. Furthermore, it includes proposals for clean energy initiatives such as nuclear power generation, carbon capture, and wind power projects across different provinces.

In addition to showcasing natural resources and infrastructure projects, Canada’s prowess in artificial intelligence is highlighted, with investment opportunities in cutting-edge technologies like quantum computing. The prospectus emphasizes Canada’s commitment to innovation and sustainability across various sectors, positioning the country as an attractive destination for global investors.
