Canada’s men’s basketball team is gearing up for the next phase of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA World Cup, with notable absences expected among the roster. General manager of Canada Basketball, Rowan Barrett, announced the lineup for the upcoming Americas qualifiers, featuring key player Nickeil Alexander-Walker from the Atlanta Hawks. Other additions include Luguentz Dort, Trae Bell-Haynes, Khem Birch, Marcus Carr, Mfiondu Kabengele, and several more.
The team is set to face Panama in Panama City and then host Argentina in Quebec City. While NBA stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks will not be present for this round, Barrett explained that various factors such as injuries, fatigue, and contractual obligations are affecting player availability.
Barrett highlighted the experienced players chosen for the qualifiers, emphasizing the importance of a balanced team with both inside and outside players. Alexander-Walker, coming off a standout season, was named the NBA’s most improved player, showcasing his growth and dedication to the sport. Additionally, veteran forward Kelly Olynyk brings leadership and experience to the team following his recent NBA Finals appearance.
