The duration of awards for individuals applying for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be prolonged starting in April to address the backlog issue.

PIP serves as the primary disability benefit for working-age individuals in the UK. Eligibility for PIP is determined by the impact of an illness, disability, or mental health condition on daily activities, rather than the condition itself.

Currently, PIP awards are typically granted for a limited period, which can be as brief as nine months. However, effective April 2026, changes will extend the minimum award period to three years for the majority of new PIP applicants aged 25 and above, with the potential to extend to five years upon review.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) stated that the objective of this measure is to allow health professionals to conduct more in-person assessments and reassessments.

These operational adjustments are distinct from the Timms Review, which will scrutinize the role of PIP, eligibility criteria for the daily living and mobility components, and the assessment process.

PIP consists of two components: the daily living component and the mobility component. The standard rate for daily living is £73.90 per week, while the higher rate is £110.40 per week.

For the mobility component, the standard rate is £29.20 per week, and the higher rate is £77.05 per week. It is crucial to inform the DWP of any changes in health or condition.

Individuals with terminal illnesses typically receive PIP automatically without an assessment. If PIP is granted under the special rules for terminal illness, the award is valid for three years before undergoing review.

PIP is accessible for individuals aged 16 and above but below state pension age. If you claim PIP and reach state pension age, your entitlement generally continues.

If you were eligible for PIP in the last 12 months, you may be able to submit a fresh claim upon reaching state pension age.
