Nigel Farage has declined to commit to an investigation into his deputy’s tax situation following revelations that companies under his ownership contributed over £1 million to Reform UK.

The head of Reform UK swiftly defended Richard Tice amid allegations that four shell companies he managed evaded nearly £100,000 in taxes on profits from 2020 to 2022. Labour criticized Farage for deflecting and labeled him as “in complete denial.”

Reports emerged indicating that the property investment firm of the wealthy Mr. Tice, Tisun Investments Ltd, transferred £1,113,000 to Reform UK. When questioned about the possibility of a probe now that Mr. Tice’s companies’ tax matters are directly linked to the party, Farage avoided a direct response and insinuated that Mr. Tice was being made a scapegoat.

Calls have been made for Mr. Tice’s dismissal following an investigation published by the Sunday Times, which raised substantial concerns. Mr. Tice himself stated that he would rectify any shortcomings if it turns out his companies should have paid more to HMRC.

Farage recalled a past incident from ten years ago where Mr. Tice, upon publicly declaring support for Brexit, underwent an immediate investigation by HMRC. He emphasized that Mr. Tice had a history of operating various companies and suggested that the accuser, a Labour Party activist, was a significant factor to consider.

Referring to tax expert Dan Neidle, who, alongside The Sunday Times, probed into Mr. Tice’s tax affairs, it was alleged that Mr. Tice’s companies were established solely to receive dividends from his property investment firm and channel funds to their parent company. During the period between March 2020 and May 2022, Tisun Investments Ltd reportedly transferred £1,113,000 to Reform UK.

In response to queries pointing out Mr. Neidle’s investigations into Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner’s tax issues, Farage conceded that investigations were conducted, particularly involving Angela Rayner due to her affiliation with the Labour Party.

Mr. Tice emphasized his extensive and successful 40-year career, spanning multiple countries and directorships of over 150 companies. He highlighted his contributions to job creation, wealth generation, and tax payments to HMRC, expressing pride in his accomplishments. He stressed the importance of tax efficiency in business operations, acknowledged the possibility of errors in a long career, and affirmed his willingness to rectify any discrepancies.

Regarding recent scrutiny, Mr. Tice criticized the continuous efforts to tarnish his reputation, suggesting that such actions discourage successful business figures from entering politics. He emphasized his dedication to serving constituents and campaigning for local elections as a testament to his commitment to the country’s well-being.

Labour chair Anna Turley demanded urgent clarification from Farage on why Mr. Tice remains in his leadership position, accusing Farage and Reform’s leadership of denial and lack of accountability. Turley criticized Reform for prioritizing self-interest over the welfare of the working class.
