An inquiry has been initiated following the discovery of over 50 decaying bodies stored improperly at a funeral home in Chicago, officials reported on Thursday.
Authorities from the Chicago Police Department are conducting an investigation after human remains were found at the South Chicago Chapel funeral home, situated at 2939 E. 95th St. in the city’s Southeast Side. Initially called to assist the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation in a “license investigation,” officers uncovered the disturbing finding.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that more than 50 deceased individuals in various stages of decomposition were found on the premises by investigators and forensic pathologists.
As the investigation continues, officials are evaluating the condition of the bodies and are in the process of locating identifying documents such as death certificates, a task that may span several days.
The unsettling revelation follows complaints from neighbors about a foul smell lingering in the vicinity for nearly two months. The odor was so overpowering at times that residents found it challenging to go outdoors. Frank Bower shared with WGN, “Every time I come through here, I smell a foul smell in the air and I was wondering what that smell was, and I kept thinking maybe it was the sewer.”
A statement released by the Chicago police stated, “Chicago Police Department officers from the 4th (South Chicago) District were called to a funeral home at the mentioned address to aid the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation in a license investigation. Upon arrival, human remains were uncovered.”
“The Chicago Fire Department was summoned to the scene and classified it as a hazardous material (HAZMAT) incident. Area 2 Detectives are currently conducting an investigation.”
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office issued a statement affirming, “The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office was informed by state and city officials of improperly stored deceased individuals at a Chicago funeral home. MEO investigators and forensic pathologists visited the funeral home located at 2939 E. 95th St. in Chicago this afternoon. The team discovered over 50 deceased individuals in various stages of decomposition.”
“The MEO team is assessing the condition of the remains, searching for identification documentation of the deceased individuals, including death certificates. This process may take several days to ensure appropriate handling.”
“The MEO will collaborate with authorities to promptly identify these deceased individuals and inform their families. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.”
