An alleged gunman remains at large within a school in Thailand, where two individuals have been reported dead. Police responded to a suspected shooter at a school located north of Bangkok on Friday, August 7. The situation is ongoing at Debsirin Nonthaburi School as authorities work to secure the area.
Instructions have been issued by the police through their Facebook page advising individuals trapped inside buildings to hide, secure all openings, and await rescue personnel. Initial reports indicate that around 20 people have sustained injuries in the school incident, with two fatalities identified as teachers.
The perpetrator has been identified by authorities as a student. Thai police and local media have reported the suspected shooter’s death, although it is unclear whether they were shot by law enforcement or took their own life. The individual has been named as Dechrapee Kongdee, a ninth-grade student, by the chief of the Nonthaburi provincial police, as ninth graders in Thailand are typically 14 years old.
The tragic incident unfolded in the Bang Kruai district of Nonthaburi province, situated to the north of Bangkok. Debsirin School, a renowned secondary school with branches across the country, was founded by Thai King Chulalongkorn in 1885 and has been attended by prominent figures, including Thai prime ministers and diplomats.
