Shabana Mahmood has assured the family of Henry Nowak that they will receive explanations following the incident where the teenager was handcuffed while he was dying.

In a heartfelt plea, the Home Secretary has appealed for calm and emphasized that the heinous act must not result in communities turning against each other.

Vickrum Digwa, aged 23, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years for fatally stabbing 18-year-old Henry with a religious blade in Southampton.

Neville Lawrence, whose son Stephen was fatally stabbed in 1993, expressed solidarity with Henry’s family, highlighting the tragic recurrence of incorrect assumptions made by attending officers. Hampshire Police faced severe criticism for handcuffing Henry, a finance student, as he succumbed to his injuries, with one officer resigning in response.

Footage from body-worn cameras captured Henry repeatedly stating that he had been stabbed, only to be dismissed by an officer. The distressing video shows Henry pleading for help before being restrained.

Sir Keir Starmer and the Prime Minister have raised concerns about the handling of the case, with a focus on potential racial bias in police actions. Vickrum Digwa misled officers by falsely claiming to be a victim of a racist attack, prompting an ongoing investigation by the police watchdog.

Three officers involved in the incident remain on duty, with no misconduct investigations initiated. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is set to meet with Henry’s family to address the outrage surrounding the incident.

Ms. Mahmood emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the police response, denouncing threats against officers and calling for a responsible approach to the situation. She urged unity and condemned any attempts to exploit the tragedy for personal or political gain.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage’s controversial remarks were criticized for potentially fueling division, while calls were made for a unified effort to combat knife crime as a national emergency.

The ongoing legal proceedings involve multiple charges against Digwa and his family members for possessing various offensive weapons, with a court hearing adjourned for further deliberation.

In the wake of the tragedy, efforts are being made to maintain community cohesion and uphold the principles of justice and equality for all citizens.
