The recent discovery of the body of an 11-year-old girl who had gone missing has sparked outrage due to revelations that the prime suspect, reportedly a friend’s father, had previous accusations of rape but had not been detained.

Authorities in France had been conducting a search for Lyhanna, who disappeared in the Gers region on May 29, leading to the grim discovery of her remains in an abandoned grain silo. Descriptions matched her attire of a black-and-white striped top, black shorts, and yellow socks featuring characters from the manga series “One Piece.”

The suspect, currently in custody, was linked to the grain silo through a tip-off as he had worked there before, according to Gers-region prosecutor Olivier Naboulet. DNA testing has confirmed the identity of the body as Lyhanna’s, although further forensic examinations are required to determine the cause of death.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed shock and disappointment at the handling of the case, acknowledging systemic failures. Reports indicated that the suspect, a 41-year-old man, had been seen near Lyhanna’s school and driving with her in his car, claiming to have dropped her off near a swimming pool.

Prosecutor Clemence Meyer disclosed that multiple complaints, including rape allegations, had been filed against the suspect by young girls and their families in the past. Despite investigations, a previous rape case in 2020 was closed in 2024 due to insufficient evidence, while another ongoing case involves allegations of repeated rape against a minor.

Additional accusations of child rape surfaced this week, prompting a government-led comprehensive inquiry. Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin criticized the handling of the cases, citing delays in transferring information between jurisdictions, lack of electronic data sharing, and failure to act on prior complaints against the suspect.

Darmanin condemned the malfunction in the justice system, emphasizing the need to take children’s testimonies seriously and improve organizational practices to prevent such tragedies in the future.
