Octopus Energy has announced the launch of 300 homes where residents will not have to pay for gas and electricity for at least ten years. The energy supplier has collaborated with Prosperity Group to develop the new site in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. The homes, equipped with heat pumps, battery storage, and solar panels, are scheduled for completion in 2028, with tenants expected to move in later that year. Pricing details for the properties have not been revealed yet.

Amidst the upcoming rise in the energy price cap due to increased oil costs following the conflict in Iran, Octopus Energy’s initiative offers a welcome relief. The current price cap stands at £1,641 annually for the average household. Octopus Energy has been proactive in approving more than 6,000 “zero bills” homes in collaboration with prominent developers, offering various housing options such as private rent, private ownership, and shared ownership properties.

With a goal to deliver 100,000 Zero Bills homes by 2030, Octopus Energy has already introduced this initiative in several countries, including Germany, France, New Zealand, and the UK. The company has observed a significant increase in sales of heat pumps, solar panels, and electric vehicle chargers, indicating a growing interest among consumers in enhancing their energy independence.

Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Director at Octopus Energy, emphasized the importance of protecting households from fluctuating energy prices, stating that living without an energy bill is now achievable through their Zero Bills tariff. Joe Billingham, Chairman of Prosperity Group, highlighted the integration of advanced technology in their developments to enhance living experiences and ensure long-term investment performance, meeting the escalating demand for sustainable, energy-efficient homes.

Additionally, recent research by Uswitch revealed that energy suppliers hold a substantial £3 billion in customer credit, urging households to review and potentially claim back any unutilized credit. The average household is reportedly in credit by nearly £200, with the total amount increasing by £179 million compared to the previous year.

Through collaborative efforts and innovative solutions, Octopus Energy and Prosperity Group are setting new standards in sustainable housing development, aligning with the evolving preferences of consumers seeking energy-efficient and cost-effective living arrangements.
