Passengers aboard a cruise ship affected by a norovirus outbreak have recounted disturbing incidents, such as individuals vomiting in public areas following a period of being stranded.
Over 1,700 passengers and crew, including numerous British citizens, found themselves marooned on the Ambition cruise liner off the coast of Bordeaux due to a highly contagious norovirus outbreak. The vessel, operated by Ambassador Cruise Line, departed from the Shetland Islands on May 6, making stops in Belfast, Liverpool, and Brest, France.
Upon reaching Bordeaux, the ship’s planned voyage to Spain was halted due to the spread of norovirus among passengers, resulting in 49 individuals falling ill. Guests have shared harrowing accounts of witnessing unsettling scenes, with one individual recalling seeing someone vomit on the deck and another on a bus.
Carol Landa-Vance, a passenger from County Antrim, along with her husband, revealed that French authorities permitted symptom-free passengers to disembark the ship. Ambassador Cruise Line assured that regular operations, including shore excursions, would resume.
David Munster from Dundonald, County Down, also on board with his wife, mentioned being informed of fellow passengers falling ill after departing from Liverpool. Those affected were isolating in their cabins while the rest of the passengers could utilize open facilities.
The cruise company acknowledged the outbreak through a social media statement, emphasizing their serious approach towards onboard illnesses. Enhanced sanitation measures were promptly enforced, including increased cleaning in public areas, altered dining services, and continuous guest education on hand hygiene.
Despite the company’s efforts, complaints regarding fellow passengers’ hygiene habits flooded social media. While some praised the ship staff for their diligence, others criticized passengers for neglecting proper hygiene practices.
The company further disclosed the unfortunate passing of a 92-year-old British man on board, clarifying that his demise was not related to norovirus symptoms. The cause of death, as reported by local media, was attributed to cardiac arrest.
During the scheduled Bordeaux stop, the operator promptly notified French health authorities and facilitated medical evaluations by local teams. Following a thorough review, the vessel was cleared by French authorities to resume standard operations.
