Former nursery worker Bessie Martin revealed concerns she raised about Nathan Bennett’s inappropriate behavior with young children were disregarded, potentially delaying his apprehension. Bennett, 30, received a 30-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting five toddlers at the Partou King Street Nursery in Bristol. Martin, a former colleague, expressed discomfort with Bennett’s interactions with children months before his arrest.
According to Martin, she repeatedly alerted management about Bennett holding children for extended periods and positioning them out of CCTV view. Despite her persistent complaints, her worries were dismissed, with management suggesting she was misinterpreting the situations. Martin emphasized the importance of her concerns being taken seriously to prevent further harm.
After submitting a whistleblowing report, Bennett was initially suspended but later allowed to resume work. However, further CCTV review revealed disturbing behavior, leading to his second suspension and subsequent arrest. Parents had also reported Bennett’s suspicious conduct prior to his arrest, but some concerns were not forwarded to the appropriate authorities as required by law.
During Bennett’s trial, staff described his possessive behavior towards certain children and apparent inappropriate actions. Partou, the nursery operator, stated that it encourages staff to report concerns and has implemented measures to enhance safeguarding practices. Following Bennett’s arrest, Partou nurseries received more regulatory notices for improvements compared to the national average, raising questions about the effectiveness of their safeguarding protocols.
Partou emphasized that safeguarding remains a top priority and highlighted ongoing efforts to support affected families. An independent safeguarding review identified shortcomings at the Bristol nursery, leading to personnel changes and internal procedures. Families affected by Bennett’s actions are seeking answers on how such a catastrophic failure in safeguarding occurred at Partou King Street nursery.
