Nigel Farage faces criticism for his significant outside earnings and is accused of profiting unfairly, sparking calls from MPs to prohibit second jobs. The leader of Reform UK reportedly received £270,000 for a brief 12-hour stint promoting gold bullion, adding up to over £2 million in earnings and gifts since taking office as MP for Clacton, in addition to his MP salary of £98,599.

Members of Parliament from various parties expressed astonishment at the permissibility of such actions and urged the government to restrict secondary employment, except in rare cases. During a parliamentary discussion, it was noted that Mr. Farage had disclosed 16 external income sources since his election in July 2024, equating to 140 days of paid work, despite his absence from the session despite prior notifications from fellow members.

Labour’s Richard Burgon, advocating for a ban on second jobs, emphasized the privileged position of MPs and the expectation that the role should be full-time to serve constituents effectively. He highlighted the discrepancy between lucrative external engagements and the primary duty of representing the public’s interests, criticizing the potential misuse of public trust for personal gain.

Recent revelations showed Mr. Farage earning £18,402 for approximately six hours of presenting on GB News, raising concerns about MPs prioritizing personal ventures over their responsibilities. The need for stricter regulations regarding outside employment by MPs is under government consideration.

Green MP Dr. Ellie Chowns strongly opposed MPs engaging in secondary occupations, pointing out Mr. Farage’s extensive outside work and substantial earnings, describing it as shocking and unethical. The focus on Mr. Farage’s financial affairs intensified following undisclosed financial dealings with a crypto billionaire, leading to a probe by the Parliamentary standards commissioner to assess potential breaches of Parliamentary regulations.

Labour’s Anna Turley underscored the urgency of revising rules governing MPs’ external income, citing examples of excessive earnings and questioning the compatibility of such activities with the duties to constituents. The Commons Committee on Standards is actively reviewing guidelines concerning MPs’ external earnings, with ongoing scrutiny of Reform UK’s financial affairs.

Requests for comments from Reform UK have been made in light of the ongoing debate surrounding MPs’ outside earnings and the need for increased transparency and accountability in public office.
