TikTok UK has stepped up its efforts to prevent young people from drowning, potentially saving lives in the future. The social media platform has allocated a significant sum of £400,000 in advertising credit to support water safety charities in the UK, namely the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK). This funding will enable these organizations to deliver crucial water safety advice to teenagers and young adults ahead of the summer season.

Following the tragic loss of his son Sam, who drowned in a reservoir during hot weather, Simon Haycock, 56, praised TikTok UK’s initiative as a breakthrough. Simon, from Sheffield, has been actively involved in the Mirror’s ‘Save Lives for Sam’ water safety campaign, which influenced TikTok’s involvement in spreading awareness.

In response to a concerning spike in water-related fatalities, the Mirror launched the campaign after 19 individuals lost their lives in a single week in May, followed by another seven deaths during a record-breaking June heatwave.

Utilizing TikTok’s platform, the RNLI will share essential advice on coastal safety, such as the importance of choosing lifeguarded beaches and understanding the dangers of cold water shock. Additionally, the RLSS UK will promote its ‘Speak up. Be A Mate’ campaign, encouraging young people to speak out when their friends engage in risky behavior around water.

TikTok expressed its commitment to providing accessible water safety information through its partnership with RNLI and RLSS UK, aiming to reach young audiences effectively. The RNLI’s Water Safety Manager, Ross MacLeod, acknowledged the impact of the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign in reaching millions of young individuals with crucial drowning prevention advice.

Acknowledging the risks faced by young people, especially during hot weather, TikTok emphasized the importance of equipping them with knowledge about water safety through engaging content. The partnership with TikTok is seen as a vital step in disseminating safety messages to young audiences effectively.

Both charities, RNLI and RLSS UK, will benefit from TikTok’s donation to enhance their water safety campaigns during the summer season. This support will enable them to provide expert guidance to young people across the UK, helping them make informed decisions near open water and empowering them to respond effectively in emergency situations.

Ara Yoo, TikTok’s Head of Product Impact, highlighted the platform’s role in sharing critical water safety advice in an accessible manner, emphasizing the significance of empowering individuals with the knowledge to stay safe during the summer months.

The Mirror’s ‘Save Lives For Sam’ campaign advocates for urgent actions to address the rising drowning crisis in the UK, calling for measures such as mandatory water safety education in schools, a nationwide public awareness campaign, improved lifesaving equipment at high-risk waterways, the implementation of Sam’s Law, and the appointment of a dedicated Minister for Water Safety.
