A mother shared her experience of losing consciousness on a plane and later being diagnosed with an extremely rare condition that affects only around 100 individuals worldwide.
Nia Jones was preparing to travel to Barcelona for a short city getaway after just returning from Paris with her daughter when she suddenly started shaking uncontrollably. She passed out and regained consciousness in the aircraft aisle with a severe headache before being rushed to a hospital following an emergency landing in France.
This frightening incident marked the beginning of a series of health challenges for Nia, ultimately leading to a diagnosis of multiple endocrine neoplasia type four, a rare form of tumor. Reflecting on the ordeal, Nia, a mother from Ruthin, Wales, described the disorientation she experienced upon waking up on the plane and the subsequent medical attention she received.
Subsequent tests, including brain scans, initially yielded no abnormal results, and Nia returned home believing it was an isolated incident. However, she continued to suffer seizures, eventually being diagnosed with epilepsy and later discovering that her calcium levels were unusually high.
Further medical examinations confirmed Nia’s rare condition, multiple endocrine neoplasia type four, characterized by mutations in a tumor suppressor gene that increases the risk of developing tumors in endocrine organs like the thyroid, pancreas, and ovaries.
Following her diagnosis, Nia underwent a surgical procedure to remove three parathyroid glands to regulate her calcium levels, which successfully prevented further seizures. With her condition now under control, Nia regained her driving privileges and expressed gratitude for her recovery, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about such rare conditions for early detection and effective treatment.
