Councils are being urged by Downing Street to permit pubs to remain open for England’s early morning World Cup match on Monday. The Three Lions are set to face Mexico at 1 am in the Round of 16 following their 2-1 victory against the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a thrilling match on Wednesday.

Although measures have been approved to extend pub hours until 2 am for England matches in the knockout stages starting between 9 pm and 10 pm, this exception does not apply to Monday’s game. Communities Secretary Steve Reed has reached out to councils, encouraging them to approve requests for pubs to extend their operating hours, providing fans with the opportunity to watch the game at their local pub.

The Prime Minister’s spokesperson stated that the Housing and Communities Secretary has made efforts to facilitate pubs extending their hours for late games to ensure fans can enjoy the football. Liberal Democrat MP Max Wilkinson called for a general extension of licensing hours for the match during discussions in the House of Commons on Thursday.

Acknowledging Harry Kane’s outstanding performance, Business Minister Kate Dearden praised the England captain and expressed support for the team. She emphasized the importance of allowing pubs to stay open for a few hours after the match concludes, ensuring fans can watch and back the team.

Furthermore, opposition leader Keir Starmer hinted at the possibility of a bank holiday if England secures a World Cup victory. Reflecting on past successes under Labour governments, Starmer expressed optimism for England’s chances in the tournament. The government previously considered an additional bank holiday if the Lionesses won the Euros final in 2022; however, as of Monday, there is no commitment to a bank holiday if England triumphs.
