A mother has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her 14-month-old son by administering a fatal combination of prescription drugs mixed with milk, as authorities were preparing to remove the child from her custody.
Emma Barnett, residing in Debden, Essex, fatally poisoned her son Oakley and went into hiding with him in the attic of their Loughton residence following a family court ruling in November 2024 to take the child away from her care. Tragically, Oakley passed away in the hospital less than two months later.
The 36-year-old Barnett, a resident of Chester Road, was convicted of murder at Cambridge Crown Court after an 18-day trial and was subsequently given a minimum prison term of 22 years by Mr. Justice Derek Sweeting during sentencing.
According to the judge, Barnett was reported missing after a virtual attendance at the family court hearing on November 8, 2024, where social workers were aiming to secure Oakley’s safety and remove him from her care as per the court order.
Barnett’s actions included parking her vehicle at Epping Forest before returning home to hide with her son in the loft. Upon police intervention, she initially resisted revealing Oakley’s condition, eventually admitting to the crime by stating “I have killed him.”
During the trial, evidence was presented showing Barnett had prepared a bottle containing a deadly concoction of milk and medication, which she then administered to Oakley, leading to his tragic death.
The court learned that Barnett had stored two baby bottles in the attic containing substances testing positive for the sedative antihistamine promethazine and the antidepressant mirtazapine. Medical experts highlighted that the combined effects of these drugs could lead to severe respiratory issues.
Nicola Pope, a senior crown prosecutor, emphasized Barnett’s deliberate actions in giving her son a lethal mixture of medication, resulting in his untimely death. The prosecution’s case was built on a thorough analysis of evidence from the police investigation, including expert medical opinions.
In a touching tribute following Barnett’s conviction, Oakley’s family described him as a source of joy and light, deeply missed for his infectious laughter and warmth. Oakley’s father also expressed his eternal love and sorrow, lamenting the lost opportunities to bond with his son.
