Meghan Markle faced ridicule after suggesting that people call her “Meg” during her recent visit to Australia. Critics viewed this move as an insincere effort to appear more down-to-earth during what some have labeled as a “faux royal tour.” The Duchess of Sussex, 44, along with her husband, Prince Harry, 41, engaged in various charitable and community activities across Melbourne, Canberra, and Sydney, including visits to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and Meghan’s solo appearance at McAuley Community Services for Women, a shelter aiding homeless women and victims of family violence.

However, the request for individuals to address the Duchess informally as “Meg” at these events received strong backlash. Many voiced their opposition after numerous calls for Harry and Meghan to cease conducting what some perceive as “pseudo-royal tours.”

According to a source familiar with public sentiment, the initiative to be called “Meg” is seen by critics as a deliberate strategy to project approachability but clashes with the established perception of Meghan as a wealthy figure with high standards. Some view it not as genuine warmth but as a calculated rebranding that lacks authenticity.

In an appearance at McAuley Community Services, Meghan Markle wore a striped apron while serving food to residents, receiving praise from attendees. A resident named Leah even complimented her appearance, to which Meghan responded graciously. Staff at the shelter also welcomed Meghan’s visit, appreciating the positive attention she brought to the facility.

Jocelyn Bignold, CEO of McAuley, expressed gratitude for the focus on homelessness and family violence that Meghan’s visit generated. The women at the shelter were thrilled to meet her, albeit a bit nervous.

During his hospital visit, Prince Harry interacted with young patients, offering words of encouragement and showing enthusiasm. The couple’s supportive words left a lasting impact on the individuals they met, with one patient mentioning how they were wished good luck and encouraged to remain brave by Harry and Meghan.
