In Manchester, a man has been apprehended under suspicion of creating an explosive device, triggering a significant emergency reaction. Canal Street saw a swarm of emergency responders yesterday, Monday, May 11, in response to reports of ‘chemical substances’ discovered in a hotel room. Following initial alerts from the public regarding the suspected chemicals’ odor, specialized teams combed through the room.
A wide cordon was established along a section of the bustling street, leading to the evacuation of the hotel, as well as several nearby bars and pubs. Greater Manchester Police’s spokesperson later mentioned that the substances found in the room were being assessed and were being safely removed.
The individual, suspected of being a guest in the room, was detained on suspicion of involvement in creating an explosive device and was taken into custody for interrogation. GMP confirmed that the chemical examination ruled out any explosive danger, with no injuries reported during the incident.
Police presence and firefighters were prominent within the cordoned-off area of Canal Street, between Sackville Street and Richmond Street, for hours. Detectives were observed visiting businesses in the vicinity, while forensics officers in white suits documented the scene and specialized teams scrutinized the materials.
The incident led to the closure of Canal Street for several hours, with the cordon eventually being lifted around 4 pm. The authorities expressed gratitude to the public and local businesses for their cooperation during the operation.
