A man has been taken into custody following an alleged sexual assault incident involving a woman near a service station on the M1 in Leicestershire.
The victim, a woman in her 20s, was walking along Baines Lane towards Hinckley Road in Leicester Forest East between 6:20 pm and 6:40 pm on Saturday when the assault occurred, as reported by Leicestershire Police.
According to authorities, the woman was suddenly attacked from behind, dragged to the ground, and sexually assaulted by the man. The assailant fled towards the southbound services when the victim started shouting for assistance.
Law enforcement has disclosed that a 59-year-old suspect was apprehended on suspicion of attempted rape in connection with the ongoing investigation. The arrest took place at Leicester Forest East southbound services on Tuesday afternoon, and the individual remains in police custody.
Detective Inspector Jenny Tattersall, representing Signal, the specialized team handling rape and sexual assault cases within the force, expressed gratitude for the information received and support provided in the investigation thus far.
While an arrest has been made, the investigation is still active, and the public is encouraged to come forward with any relevant information. Specifically, individuals who may have been at the services between 4 pm and 7 pm, including HGV drivers and other motorists from outside Leicestershire, are urged to contact the authorities.
