A man faced a severe leg condition after contracting an infection from swimming in a canal. Sam McAlpine Peyr swam in the Stroudwater Navigation Canal with his family, only to wake up the next day with a fever and groin pain. Initially dismissing it, he later had to return home from work due to feeling unwell.
After experiencing flu-like symptoms and an infected left leg, Sam sought medical attention at a hospital. Doctors diagnosed him with an infection that likely entered through a small crack in his heel during his swim. This infection led to lymphoedema, a chronic condition causing tissue swelling.
Having swum in April last year, Sam’s left leg remains twice the size of his right, necessitating compression bandages and reduced physical activity. His wife, Georgia, is raising funds for specialized surgery, cautioning against swimming with any cuts or wounds to prevent similar incidents.
Georgia aims to raise awareness to prevent others from experiencing such health issues. Sam requires private Lymphaticovenous Anastomosis (LVA) surgery to manage lymphoedema. Georgia recounts the rapid escalation of Sam’s condition post-swim, emphasizing the permanent damage to his lymphatic system.
Notably, the Stroud Valleys Canal Company advises against unauthorized swimming in canals due to safety concerns, including potential hazards and unsuitable water quality. They refer individuals to the Canal and River Trust guidelines for safe canal activities.
