A man, identified as Beran A., has admitted to supporting the Islamic State group and planning an attack on Taylor Swift’s concert in Vienna. The incident led to the cancellation of Swift’s performances in August 2024, causing disappointment among her fans who had traveled from various parts of the world to attend her Eras Tour.

Reportedly, Beran A. confessed to the charges related to the concert scheme, although the specifics of his plea were not immediately disclosed. The 21-year-old Austrian citizen faces serious allegations, including involvement in terrorist activities and association with a terrorist organization. His legal counsel had indicated his intention to plead guilty to most of the accusations, which could result in a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.

Together with an individual named Arda K., whose full identity remains undisclosed, Beran A. planned coordinated attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan of 2024 on behalf of the Islamic State group. Despite their intentions, the attacks were never carried out, and only Beran A. faced charges linked to the plot targeting Taylor Swift’s concert.

The plan involved targeting the large crowds gathered outside Ernst Happel Stadium, aiming to cause harm using knives or homemade explosives. Authorities stated that the suspect aimed to maximize casualties. Following intelligence inputs from the United States, the decision was made to cancel the concerts as a preventive measure.

Allegedly, Beran A. engaged with other Islamic State members in preparing for the attack, discussing weapon procurement and bomb-making. Furthermore, he attempted to acquire arms illegally shortly before the planned event and swore allegiance to the extremist group.

During a search of his residence on August 7, 2024, authorities discovered materials for making explosives. Swift expressed her distress over the cancellations on Instagram, emphasizing the emotional toll it took on her and her fans who had planned to attend the shows.

The trial is ongoing in Wiener Neustadt, with future proceedings scheduled for May 12. Additionally, terrorism-related charges have been brought against Arda K. in connection with the coordinated attack plans in multiple countries. Hasan E., another individual involved in the scheme, was apprehended after allegedly stabbing a security guard at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Beran A., upon returning to Vienna, shifted focus to targeting Taylor Swift’s concert, drawing parallels to the tragic 2017 bombing at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England.
