A major railway line closure is on the horizon as significant renovation work is set to begin on a four-mile tunnel that connects two cities. Network Rail will be leading the project to upgrade the Severn Tunnel starting from May 23 until June 9, prompting rail travelers to plan their journeys accordingly.

The overhaul, in collaboration with contractor ARQ, aims to enhance the tunnel’s overhead power system to withstand its challenging and corrosive environment under the Severn Estuary. Nia Watkins, the Regional Asset Manager at Network Rail’s Wales and Borders route, emphasized the importance of these works in ensuring the safety and reliability of services and securing the tunnel’s future.

The extensive upgrade, described as groundbreaking in scale, will be implemented along the full length of the 4.35-mile tunnel to increase resilience and minimize the risk of future disruptions for passengers and freight. Network Rail highlighted that the tunnel poses unique challenges due to the harsh conditions that accelerate equipment deterioration.

To combat the effects of moisture and saltwater, Network Rail’s Wales and Borders team will introduce a pioneering 7km copper contact wire system supported by modified bridge arms to combat corrosion. This innovative solution, a first of its kind at this magnitude, will involve the replacement of 9,000 meters of wiring and the installation of 838 bridge arms to support the new infrastructure.

In addition to the tunnel works, Network Rail is also progressing with the replacement of the track serving the new Bristol Brabazon station. This station will mark the reintroduction of passenger services on the Henbury and Portishead lines for the first time since 1964, necessitating the temporary closure of the railway between Newport and Bristol Parkway.

During the closure period from May 23 to June 8, replacement bus services will operate between Newport and Bristol Parkway, while some trains will be rerouted between London and South Wales via Gloucester. Passenger services will resume on June 9, with a reduced service operating between London Paddington and Bristol Parkway.

Marcus Deegan, GWR’s Station Manager at Bristol Parkway, acknowledged the inconvenience of the bus replacement services and expressed gratitude for passengers’ understanding during the essential renovation work. The improvements being made to the Severn Tunnel are expected to enhance the route’s reliability and resilience for years to come, with further benefits anticipated for the introduction of services to Bristol Brabazon and eventually to Portishead and Pill, facilitating economic growth in the region.
