A tortoise named Molly, an African spurred species native to the Sahara desert, was discovered ambling slowly around Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake, far from its natural habitat. Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at the marsh, and her colleagues rescued Molly, who weighed 36 kilograms, after receiving reports of unusual tortoise sightings. Initially, they believed the sightings were of a common snapping turtle, but a post on the iNaturalist app confirmed the presence of the tortoise.

Upon spotting Molly in the marsh’s parking lot, staff members fed her cucumbers and flower petals, provided guided tours, and cared for her until her owners were located. Molly’s family, who had raised her for 15 years, reclaimed her after she had gone missing from their backyard during renovations. Despite being nature’s “little Houdini,” as described by Malchuk, Molly’s journey to the marsh, approximately 20 kilometers away, remains a mystery.

Speculations suggest that a well-intentioned individual may have relocated Molly to the wetland, unaware of the risks to a tortoise in such an environment. The staff ponders whether Molly traveled the entire distance on her own. Malchuk expressed astonishment at Molly’s trek and emphasized the dangers a tortoise faces in a wetland setting. The peculiar journey of Molly, the wayward African spurred tortoise, continues to intrigue those at Oak Hammock Marsh.
