Hours after singer Ed Sheeran responded to the controversy surrounding rapper Macklemore’s removal from his tour due to pro-Palestinian remarks, all remaining supporting acts have decided to leave Sheeran’s tour.

Sheeran expressed his dismay over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, labeling the suffering on both sides as a human tragedy but refrained from taking a public stance. Following Macklemore’s exclusion, supporting acts Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, Beoga, and Finneas announced their departure from the tour in solidarity with Palestinians, resulting in no opening acts for the tour.

Sheeran explained that venues threatened to cancel his performances if Macklemore, 43, continued as the opening act due to the manner in which he conveyed his message during performances. Videos of Macklemore chanting “Free Palestine” and expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank have drawn criticism from pro-Israel groups.

Sheeran clarified that the decision to remove Macklemore was made by the promoter, not him. Despite his attempts to resolve the situation, the venues remained firm in their stance.

Supporting acts like Rowe, Beoga, Lukas Graham, and Finneas cited various reasons for leaving the tour, including historical trauma, advocacy for justice, and the need to speak out against conflict and oppression.

The situation has brought attention to the challenges faced by artists who speak out on sensitive political issues, with some facing repercussions for their public stances. The future of Sheeran’s tour remains uncertain, with questions arising about whether the remaining U.S. dates will proceed without opening acts or seek replacements.

The controversy highlights the complexities surrounding artists’ involvement in political discourse and the impact it can have on their careers.
