A gentleman is currently in critical condition at a London hospital after experiencing a cardiac arrest just a short distance away from the endpoint of the London Marathon. Gareth Hopkins, aged 43, was participating in the event for Age UK to honor his grandmother’s memory when the unfortunate incident occurred. He is a paramedic and is now receiving intensive care treatment.
To assist his family during this challenging time, a fundraising page on GoFundMe has been established. His friend James Pearson expressed optimism and hope for Gareth’s recovery amidst the uncertainty surrounding his condition. The sudden turn of events has deeply affected Gareth’s wife, Jodie, their children, parents, and sibling.
Gareth, who has served as a paramedic with the East of England Ambulance Service for two decades, entered the marathon alongside his brother Chris. The brothers dedicated their run to their late grandmother, Tricia Petts, who passed away in January 2025 after battling Alzheimer’s and dementia for six years.
Before the marathon, Gareth, a resident of Hoddesdon, mentioned in an interview with the BBC that he had not engaged in any physical exercise for five years and was not a regular runner. Despite this, he was determined to complete the race after shedding weight and training rigorously for the 26-mile event.
Having raised a substantial amount for charity, this year’s London Marathon, which occurred last Sunday, collected over £87.5 million. In response to the incident, more than £22,300 has already been contributed to the GoFundMe page set up to support Gareth’s family.
