Lidl is set to open over 50 new stores within the next year, generating 2,000 job opportunities. The expansion is part of a £600 million investment initiative, with new locations in Abbots Langley near Watford, Warrington in Cheshire, and Thornbury in Gloucestershire slated to open this summer. The supermarket chain is actively seeking properties across Great Britain for this expansion.

Currently operating over 1,000 stores in the UK and employing more than 35,000 individuals, Lidl aims to bolster local economies and support communities through its growth strategy. Ryan McDonnell, the CEO of Lidl GB, emphasized the company’s commitment to creating high-quality jobs and fostering partnerships with British suppliers to ensure a sustainable future.

In response to the announcement, Employment Minister Kate Dearden praised Lidl’s investment in creating thousands of jobs with competitive wages, enhancing living standards across various regions. Lidl also increased its staff pay rates, with entry-level wages rising to £13.45 per hour nationwide, and up to £14.45 based on tenure. In London, new starter pay will increase from £14.35 to £14.80, reaching £15.30 with experience, representing a £29 million investment by the supermarket.

During the recent holiday season, Lidl experienced a significant sales surge, with nearly 51 million customers shopping at their stores. The UK business generated over £1.1 billion in turnover leading up to Christmas Eve, attributing the success to a record-breaking increase in shopper numbers. Lidl’s focus on offering competitive prices and British produce without compromising on quality has garnered customer loyalty and expanded its reach across the country.
