Lidl has introduced changes to its loyalty program, now offering points to customers based on their spending. Users of Lidl Plus will earn one point for every pound spent in-store, which can later be exchanged for coupons for free items or discounts on purchases.
For instance, a hundred points on the Lidl Plus app could earn you a complimentary cucumber, plain tortilla wraps, or houmous. With 200 points, you can claim a free halloumi or Greek yoghurt, while 300 points can be redeemed for a £3 discount on your next shopping trip. Accumulating 500 points entitles you to a £5 discount.
The new points system, valid for two years, replaces the previous rewards structure based on monthly spending thresholds. Under the old scheme, customers received various rewards such as a free bakery treat after spending £10, a fresh vegetable after £50, and a 10% discount on the next purchase after reaching £250.
Despite the changes, Lidl Plus still offers personalized discount coupons on selected products. To redeem points, users need to visit the Rewards Marketplace section within the Lidl Plus app and select their preferred reward.
Lidl believes the updated system offers more flexibility to customers, although some rewards may require higher spending thresholds than before. For instance, a free brownie currently requires 90 points, equivalent to a £90 spend.
According to a Lidl spokesperson, users may earn more than one point per pound spent, thanks to special promotions like Rewards of the Week, double points, triple points, or free points on specific items.
Louise Weise, Lidl’s chief customer officer, stated that the new system provides customers with greater control over their rewards, allowing them to choose how and when to use them based on individual preferences.
To kick off the revamped loyalty program, Lidl Plus is offering all app users 100 free points. Additionally, customers will receive double points for any fruit purchases made until May 22.
