A British duo is potentially looking at a three-decade prison sentence for allegedly trying to transport two suitcases filled with cannabis into the United Kingdom.

Holly Cooper and her partner Taylor Johnson, aged 20, were apprehended in Istanbul, Turkey, during their journey from Thailand. Authorities captured the couple while they were en route to catch their connecting flight to London.

Subsequent to interrogation, they were confined in a holding cell where reportedly, Taylor was assaulted by individuals described as Turkish troublemakers, according to sources from his family.

The pair, residents of Wednesbury in the West Midlands, were subsequently transferred to another detention facility. However, it might take up to a year before their trial begins, and they are not represented by their own legal counsel but rather by a public legal team.

Friends are now rallying to gather funds to support the couple’s legal expenses as their worried families await updates on the situation. If convicted, the couple could potentially face a mandatory sentence ranging from 10 to 30 years in prison.

A family acquaintance described the couple as “well-behaved youngsters.” Speaking to The Sun, the acquaintance mentioned, “Yes, they made a foolish decision this time, but everyone slips up.

“They were lured and manipulated by more significant criminals and taken advantage of by them. They find themselves isolated in a Turkish prison. It’s distressing, especially with reports of Taylor being physically assaulted. The families are devastated.”

A spokesperson from the FCDO stated: “We are extending assistance to two British citizens detained in Turkey and their families, and are in communication with the local authorities.”
