Andy Burnham is set to take the helm as the new leader of the Labour Party today, with plans to assume the role of Prime Minister on Monday.

The Member of Parliament for Makerfield, Andy Burnham, who recently returned to Parliament, faced no opposition in his bid for leadership following Keir Starmer’s resignation. Mr. Burnham is expected to announce his cabinet lineup shortly, with Shabana Mahmood anticipated to take over as Chancellor from Rachel Reeves.

A special conference is scheduled for noon to formalize Mr. Burnham’s leadership position, followed by a speech later in the day around 2:30 pm.

In a gracious message to his successor, Keir Starmer expressed confidence in Andy Burnham’s ability to secure victory in the upcoming general election. Starmer remarked in his final interview as Prime Minister to The Mirror that the party is now well-positioned to secure a second term, building on the foundation laid during his leadership.

Andy Burnham is poised to unveil his vision for economic revitalization, increased public oversight, and industrial development later today. He intends to redirect the country’s trajectory, which he believes deviated in the 1980s with centralized political power and privatized economic control.

Under his leadership, Mr. Burnham pledges that the Labour Party will prioritize the well-being of people and communities, aiming for a more cohesive and focused approach to governance. He also plans to unify the party and pay tribute to Keir Starmer for his contributions while highlighting Labour’s achievements since 2024, including advancements in workers’ rights, healthcare, and the passing of key legislation.

Andy Burnham emerged as the sole candidate to receive the necessary support to succeed Keir Starmer, gaining overwhelming backing from Labour MPs and affiliated unions.

Upon officially assuming the Labour Party leadership on Friday, Andy Burnham will emphasize his commitment to championing Labour’s values and leading the government with determination. As he transitions into the role of Prime Minister on Monday, he will underscore the importance of addressing neglected issues and advocating for the party’s policies.

Keir Starmer expressed optimism about Labour’s prospects under Burnham’s leadership, hailing his own accomplishments during his tenure and affirming his support for a smooth transition of power. Starmer, who will step down from office after a brief two-year term, acknowledged the party’s improved standing and expressed confidence in its future trajectory under Burnham’s guidance.
