Keir Starmer has called for both parties to seek a resolution following the breakdown of US-Iran peace discussions today.

During a recent phone conversation, the Prime Minister and the Sultan of Oman agreed on the importance of the US, Israel, and Iran avoiding any further escalation. Emphasizing the need for a sustained ceasefire, they highlighted the necessity for continued peace efforts.

A spokesperson from Downing Street conveyed that the Prime Minister engaged in a dialogue with the Sultan of Oman, discussing the recent peace talks in Pakistan and emphasizing the importance of finding a path forward for both sides. They stressed the significance of upholding the ceasefire and preventing any escalation of the situation.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for Oman’s efforts in rescuing distressed sailors in the Strait of Hormuz. He also affirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Oman’s security and updated on collaborative initiatives with Ukraine regarding drone technology.

Acknowledging Ukraine’s crucial role in the region, the Prime Minister noted Russia’s alignment with Iran’s aggressive stance. The leaders agreed to schedule another discussion soon.

The Prime Minister has been at the forefront of European endeavors to reopen the blocked Strait of Hormuz, a critical route responsible for a significant portion of global oil transportation.

Efforts to reopen the Strait under a US-Iran ceasefire have encountered challenges since the agreement earlier this week, leading to a surge in gas prices due to the ongoing closure.

Britain is set to host additional talks next week with a coalition of nations to facilitate the reopening of the vital shipping lane in the Strait of Hormuz, furthering the government’s mission to restore navigation freedom in the area.

US Vice President JD Vance is currently in Pakistan for peace negotiations with Iran, though a prolonged 21-hour session concluded without a resolution early on Sunday morning.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting expressed disappointment at the lack of progress in talks in Islamabad, stating the importance of continued diplomatic efforts despite setbacks. Streeting highlighted the necessity for a breakthrough to end the war in Iran, emphasizing the global interest in achieving peace.
