A significant joint rescue mission was launched in the English Channel today to save 157 migrants whose dinghy capsized due to an engine fire. The operation involved French vessels, British Border Security Command boats, and an RNLI lifeboat. They rescued the migrants and brought them to Boulogne-sur-Mer, near Calais, with British vessels assisting in the safe transport of 54 migrants.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency reported that the dinghy caught fire in a French search and rescue region during one of the largest attempts to cross the Channel. French authorities were alerted to the vessel departing from the Veules-les-Roses area and dispatched rescue teams to monitor its journey.
While tracking the boat, five individuals were rescued by French authorities before the remaining group continued their journey. However, the engine caught fire, prompting an urgent response to rescue the migrants as the boat rapidly deteriorated. The Border Security Command ship BSC Contender also participated in the rescue efforts.
